Finding Cinderella book by Colleen Hoover

A chance encounter in the dark leads eighteen-year-old Daniel and the girl who stumbles across him to profess their love for each other. But this love has conditions: they agree it will last only one hour, and it will be only make-believe.

When their hour is up and the girl rushes off like Cinderella, Daniel tries to convince himself that what happened between them seemed perfect only because they were pretending it was. Moments like that happen only in fairy tales.

One year and one bad relationship later, his disbelief in love-at-first-sight is stripped away the day he meets Six: a girl with a strange name and an even stranger personality. Unfortunately for Daniel, finding true love doesn”t guarantee a happily ever after… it only further threatens it.

Will an unbearable secret from the past jeopardize Daniel and Six’s only chance at saving each other?

The landmark work on race in America from James Baldwin, whose life and words are immortalized in the Oscar-nominated film I Am Not Your Negro

‘We, the black and the white, deeply need each other here if we are really to become a nation’

James Baldwin’s impassioned plea to ‘end the racial nightmare’ in America was a bestseller when it appeared in 1963, galvanising a nation and giving voice to the emerging civil rights movement. Told in the form of two intensely personal ‘letters’, The Fire Next Time is at once a powerful evocation of Baldwin’s early life in Harlem and an excoriating condemnation of the terrible legacy of racial injustice.

‘Sermon, ultimatum, confession, deposition, testament, and chronicle … all presented in searing, brilliant prose’ The New York Times Book Review

‘Baldwin writes with great passion … it reeks of truth, as the ghettoes of New York and London, Chicago and Manchester reek of our hypocrisy’ Sunday Times

‘The great poet-prophet of the civil rights movement … his seminal work’ Guardian

    Author: James Baldwin

After President Daniel Moi’s retirement in 2002, many were not surprised that Lee Njiru, the long-serving Head of Presidential Press Service (PPS), was retained as his Press Secretary.

They had walked together through the highs and lows of his Presidency, weathering storms, including the attempted 1982 coup and strong waves of multi-partyism.

Earlier, Lee was among the few pressmen Moi inherited from Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s regime. He was loyal, passionate, and delivered on this challenging assignment.

A household name, Lee’s grasp of historical subjects and current affairs are impressive, partly explaining Moi’s firm confidence in him. He employed an optimistic approach and a persuasive technique to every task assigned, allowing him to influence positively as Mzee’s adviser. He helped the government to arm or nullify an idea, belief or attitude to create progress or preserve the nation State.

As Head of PPS, he used his knowledge and skills to pave the way for others, helping them to achieve big dreams, and went beyond the call of duty to give back to society. A number of individuals, schools, churches, self-help groups and communities can attest to his philanthropy and relief efforts.

The book, therefore, gives a rare glimpse of happenings in the corridors of power and illustrates efforts made at the Presidency to advance project Kenya. It is a useful read for everyone, but more so scholars, historians, policy makers, public policy experts, and politicians in Kenya and beyond.

  • My Crown of Beauty for Ashes is a personal account of the author’s tribulations following early childhood sexual abuse. The abuse first occurs through a twisted and friendly gardener, and later escalates to other men, who molests and rapes her.

The abuse is so bad it sends the author to a streak of self-destructive tendencies and behaviour through alcoholism, indiscriminate sexual encounters – including same-sex liaison. A period of renewed rape in Tanzania results in a pregnancy by a side boyfriend from which a child is finally born. Despite a new sense to life, a return to the risky life by the narrator leads to depression and institutionalization.

However, through strong and loving friends, the narrator is able to overcome challenges, embracing a religion and personal acceptance.

The central theme is abuse. The book explores how this happens, the consequences, what may be done to avoid its recurrence and how to find healing from trauma and other negative consequences.

The author also expresses some liberal views on matters of education – an indictment of the Kenyan system – mainly from the author’s personal experience. The author extends this liberal viewpoint to matters relating to childhood care, religion and self-awareness.

The book is written from a first person point of view. All that is stated is true about real-life situations that happened to the narrator.
