The Bomber Mafia;Malcolm Gladwell

KShs1,790.00

‘The Bomber Mafia is a case study in how dreams go awry. When some shiny new idea drops from the heavens, it does not land softly in our laps. It lands hard, on the ground, and shatters.’

In the years before the Second World War, in a sleepy air force base in central Alabama, a small group of renegade pilots put forth a radical idea. What if we made bombing so accurate that wars could be fought entirely from the air? What if we could make the brutal clashes between armies on the ground a thing of the past?

This book tells the story of what happened when that dream was put to the test. The Bomber Mafia follows the stories of a reclusive Dutch genius and his homemade computer, Winston Churchill’s forbidding best friend, a team of pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard, a brilliant pilot who sang vaudeville tunes to his crew, and the bomber commander, Curtis Emerson LeMay, who would order the bloodiest attack of the Second World War.

In this tale of innovation and obsession, Gladwell asks: what happens when technology and best intentions collide in the heat of war? And what is the price of progress?

Oburu Oginga: In the Shadow of my Father by Oburu Oginga

EALA Member of Parliament Oburu Odinga on Thursday launched his autobiography titled ‘In the Shadow of my Father’ that details the family life, career, and political pursuits of the Oginga family and Kenya’s history through his eyes.

The launch ceremony, held in Nairobi, was graced by a number of political bigwigs and high profile industry shapers, key among them were ODM Leader Raila Odinga, Royal Media Services Chairman SK Macharia, and lawyer James Orengo.

While making his remarks, Oburu said he was surprised by how many people were looking forward to the launch of his autobiography, based on the turnout at the event.

“I also want to express my gratitude particularly because of the enthusiasm I saw everyone who came here had about this book I did not know when I was writing that this book would draw a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of interest the way it has done,” Oburu said.

On his part Raila congratulated his brother for his accomplishment, insisting that the book will resonate well with readers just like other works penned by great African authors.

“Not yet Uhuru (Jaramogi Odinga), The tales of Freedom (John Okri) and Now Oburu’s Biography.”
Orengo also underscored that the book will have a huge cultural and social impact on the history, culture, and the people of Kenya.

  • The play opens with two tribunes discovering the commoners of Rome celebrating Julius Caesar‘s triumphant return from defeating the sons of his military rival, Pompey. The tribunes, insulting the crowd for their change in loyalty from Pompey to Caesar, attempt to end the festivities and break up the commoners, who return the insults. During the feast of Lupercal, Caesar holds a victory parade and a soothsayer warns him to “Beware the ides of March,” which he ignores. Meanwhile, Cassius attempts to convince Brutus to join his conspiracy to kill Caesar. Although Brutus, friendly towards Caesar, is hesitant to kill him, he agrees that Caesar may be abusing his power. They then hear from Casca that Mark Antony has offered Caesar the crown of Rome three times. Casca tells them that each time Caesar refused it with increasing reluctance, hoping that the crowd watching would insist that he accept the crown. He describes how the crowd applauded Caesar for denying the crown, and how this upset Caesar. On the eve of the ides of March, the conspirators meet and reveal that they have forged letters of support from the Roman people to tempt Brutus into joining. Brutus reads the letters and, after much moral debate, decides to join the conspiracy, thinking that Caesar should be killed to prevent him from doing anything against the people of Rome if he were ever to be crowned.
