About The Author, John Ruganda;
John (Mary) Ruganda was born in Fort Portal on 30th May 1941 and died in Uganda’s Kampala on 8th December 2007. He graduated from the University of Makerere, which was the “center of critical literary debate for a period in the 1960s”. Ruganda along with Robert Serumanga were considered to be the “main force behind the development of the Ugandan theatrical scene in the 70s and 80s” (Student Encyclopedia 272).
He wrote his first play “The State of the Zombie- in 1965.

Notable plays published by the author: The Burdens (1972), Covenant with Death (1973), Black Mamba (1973), The Floods (1980), Music Without Tears (1982) and Echoes of Silence (1986). His plays have a global significance especially to fellow Africans. John Ruganda was one of the founding members of the Makerere Free Travelling Theatre and was elected its chief organizer in 1966.
What Made Him Write The ‘Floods’?
The political coup d’etat of 1971 by the notorious Butcher of Uganda, “General Idi Amin Dada”, is what influenced John Ruganda to write most of his books.
