Conquest by will By Nahashon Harrison

In the deep valleys of River Mathioya lived a couple.Harrison and Jane were happily married.Life in the rural area was challenging but they were contented. In those days, westernization had not penetrated the interiors of Kenya yet. The couple’s livelihood depended on farming and fishing.

In 1987, their firstborn son was born. Later in 1989, the second and last born followed. The native’s source of livelihood was becoming unpopular. Harrison moved out to a little town and adopted shop-keeping as an alternative career. Jane was left behind to take care of their two sons.

Later in 1991, the unexpected happened. Harrison fell ill. Attempts by doctors to save his life proved futile and he passed on. Hepatocellular carcinoma took away his life. He was buried at the banana plantation behind their house. The widowed Jane was disappointed by the dramatic turn of events. She felt that the world was against her. She took their two sons and took them to her maternal home very far away from Mathioya. Later, she leaves her sons behind in the care of their grandmother. As the sole provider to her family, she dealt with cheap labor. As a mother, she ensured her sons schooled like everyone else’.The challenges were immense but worth it.From the deep valleys of Mathioya originates a story so breathtaking and captivating…as Nahashon Harrison vividly narrates.
