Mwelusi organises resistance against Bokono’s tyranny; a corrupt regime that exploits and terrorises its people and one that is upheld by ruthless enforcers like Batu, Zigu and the police. Mwelusi is soon arrested, tortured, and imprisoned but thankfully escapes with the help of allies, only to face the ultimate betrayal from one close to him in exchange for the promise of wealth and power.

The play highlight’s themes of betrayal, oppression, nationalism, hope and the cost of liberation. Through sharp dialogue, vivid symbolism (as well as a site of death and rebirth), and realistic characters, Kithaka wa Mberia crafts a powerful critique of authoritarianism.
