Oburu Oginga: In the Shadow of my Father by Oburu Oginga

EALA Member of Parliament Oburu Odinga on Thursday launched his autobiography titled ‘In the Shadow of my Father’ that details the family life, career, and political pursuits of the Oginga family and Kenya’s history through his eyes.

The launch ceremony, held in Nairobi, was graced by a number of political bigwigs and high profile industry shapers, key among them were ODM Leader Raila Odinga, Royal Media Services Chairman SK Macharia, and lawyer James Orengo.

While making his remarks, Oburu said he was surprised by how many people were looking forward to the launch of his autobiography, based on the turnout at the event.

“I also want to express my gratitude particularly because of the enthusiasm I saw everyone who came here had about this book I did not know when I was writing that this book would draw a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of interest the way it has done,” Oburu said.

On his part Raila congratulated his brother for his accomplishment, insisting that the book will resonate well with readers just like other works penned by great African authors.

“Not yet Uhuru (Jaramogi Odinga), The tales of Freedom (John Okri) and Now Oburu’s Biography.”
Orengo also underscored that the book will have a huge cultural and social impact on the history, culture, and the people of Kenya.

Will needed Lou as much as she needed him, but will her love be enough to save his life?

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun teashop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.

In this quietly powerful and eminently readable novel, winner of the prestigious Sinclair Prize, Kenyan writer Marjorie Macgoye deftly interweaves the story of one young woman’s tumultuous coming of age with the history of a nation emerging from colonialism. At the age of sixteen, Paulina leaves her small village in western Kenya to join her new husband, Martin, in the bustling city of Nairobi. It is 1956, and Kenya is in the final days of the “Emergency,” as the British seek to suppress violent anti-colonial revolts. But Paulina knows little about, about city life, or about marriage, and Martin’s clumsy attempts to control her soon lead to a relationship filled with silences, misunderstandings, and unfulfilled expectations. Soon Paulina’s inability to bear a child effectively banishes her from the confines of traditional women’s roles. As her country at last moves toward independence, Paulina manages to achieve a kind of independence as well: She accepts a job that will require her to live separately from her husband, and she has an affair that leads to the birth of her first child. But Paulina’s hard-won contentment will be shattered when Kenya’s turbulent history intrudes into her private life, bringing with it tragedy—and a new test of her quiet courage and determination. Paulina’s patient struggles for survival and identity are revealed through Marjorie Macgoye’s keen and sensitive vision—a vision which extends to embrace the whole of a nation and a people likewise struggling to find their way. As the Weekly Standard of Kenya notes, “Coming to Birth is a radical novel in firmly asserting our common humanity.”

  • ‘Elikem married me in absentia; he did not come to our wedding.’

Afi Tekple is a young seamstress living in a small town in Ghana with her widowed mother. Even Afi doesn’t believe her future holds much excitement. Until one day she is offered a life-changing opportunity – a proposal of marriage from the wealthy family of Elikem Ganyo, a man she barely knows. Marriage could be the key to the life she’s always wanted, but when she meets Eli, she realises her fairy-tale ending might not be so straightforward. Elikem is not quite the catch he first seemed, and his affections are otherwise engaged. As she balances the often conflicting roles of wife, daughter, niece and sister-in-law, Afi starts to question whether she has made the right choice.

Bursting with warmth and humour, His Only Wife is a witty, smart and moving comedy-of-manners about the search for independence, and the rules that might have to be broken along the way.
