Raila Odinga. An Enigma in Kenyan Politics book by Babafemi A. Badejo

Raila Amolo Odinga was the main opposition candidate in the disputed 2007 presidential election. Following a post-electoral crisis that resulted in the deaths of 1,500 people and the displacement of 600,000 more, Odinga took office as Prime Minister, at the head of a national unity government, in April 2008. He has played a key role in the modern political life of Kenya.

An epilogue gives verbatim extracts from many of those interviewed, including Raila himself. Babafemi Badejo is a political scientist and lawyer, a past University senior lecturer from Nigeria, and worked from Nairobi for a decade. “His achievement is to render accessible both the complex political history of Kenya and the personal story of one of the most influential and controversial actors on the contemporary Kenyan political scene.
“Raila Odinga: An Enigma in Kenyan Politics” is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated to the complex landscape of Kenyan politics.” – Dr. Jeremy Matam Farrall, University of Tasmania, Australia “The quest for democracy in Kenya is illuminated by this empathetic account of the travails of an intrepid politician.” Richard L. Sklar, Emeritus Professor, University of California Los Angelos “Raila Odinga is a poster politician in Kenya, and, indeed, in any African country.
Given the crisis of political leadership in Africa and the burning quest for alternative political leadership on the continent, Raila Odinga’s biography provides an interesting case study that in part provides for for serious thought on both issues.” Dr. Willy Mutunga, former Executive Director, Kenya Human Rights Commission. “I found this book very absorbing, and a sympathetic portrayal of an African post-independence leader from an African perspective. As such, I think it is of great interest.” David Stephen, former Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia and later Guinea-Bissau

On April 14, 2014, 276 girls from the Chibok Secondary School in northern Nigeria were kidnapped by Boko Haram, the world’s deadliest terrorist group. Most were never heard from again. Acclaimed Nigerian novelist Helon Habila, who grew up in northern Nigeria, returned to Chibok and gained intimate access to the families of the kidnapped to offer a devastating account of this tragedy that stunned the world. With compassion and deep understanding of historical context, Habila tells the stories of the girls and the anguish of their parents; chronicles the rise of Boko Haram and the Nigerian government’s inept response; and captures the indifference of the media and the international community whose attention has moved on.

Employing a fiction writer’s sensibility and a journalist’s curiosity, THE CHIBOK GIRLS provides poignant portraits of everyday Nigerians whose lives have been transformed by extremist forces. Habila illuminates the long history of colonialism–and unmasks cultural and religious dynamics–that gave rise to the conflicts that have ravaged the region to this day.

  • Bill Gates: In His Own Words (In Their Own Words) by Lisa Rogak

Get inside the head of one of the most important leaders of our time with this collection of quotes from—global business icon and philanthropist Bill Gates, the co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft.

After founding Microsoft in 1975, Bill Gates took the software industry by storm. Today, Microsoft has become one of the largest technology companies in the world—boasting a market capitalization of more than $1.6 trillion. From the Windows operating system to Microsoft Office Suite, Gates and his team forever changed the way people use computers—and ultimately planted the seeds of a global technology revolution in the process.

Gates has long been ranked as one of the world’s wealthiest men—which gave him a name recognition far greater than that of most CEOs—and businesspeople of all stripes have looked to him as a role model, using his words and business strategies to help create, inspire, and grow their own companies. After he stopped running Microsoft’s day-to-day operations in 2008 to devote himself full-time to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a kinder, gentler Gates began to emerge. In stark contrast to the implacable reputation Gates earned as a CEO, as a philanthropist, Gates has helped to change the lives of millions of people worldwide. In technology, in business, and now, in philanthropy, Gates has proven himself to be one of the most influential people of our time.

Bill Gates’s second act is no less compelling than his first.

This collection of quotes provides an inside look into the inner workings of one of the most revered, and occasionally controversial, business icons of the past four decades. And whether you’re interested in his personal life or looking for inspiration to drive you forward in your own business endeavors, Bill Gates: In His Own Words has much to offer. As the tech giants who distinguished the turn of the 21st century shape public life in ways that outstrip the previous century’s titans of industry, we look to figures like Gates for inspiration. Now updated, expanded, and redesigned since its original publication in 2012 as Impatient Optimist: Bill Gates In His Own Words, you can find Gates’s most inspirational, thought-provoking quotes in one place.
